Manhattan Neighborhoods

Lower East Side apartment rentals can be found in the Manhattan neighborhood that stretches from south of Houston Street to the Manhattan Bridge and from the East River to the Bowery. The last area New Yorkers would have bet would become "cool", the Lower East Side has successfully made the transition from down-and-out to hip and desirable. (See Lower East Side in NYC's Hot Neighborhoods Section.)

Up until yesterday, it seems, the Lower East Side of New York City was what it had always been, a population of immigrants who had turned the area into six-story residential tenement buildings; an exotic emporium for inexpensive fabrics, clothes, leather goods and mom-and-pop Jewish delicatessens. Today, the neighborhood's chic is apparent as new renters and buyers move in, and the young claim the area with trendy bars, cafes and performance spaces. You can still get more value on housing, however, but it's definitely not the low rent district of yester yore.
